Jennifer Love Hewitt Addresses Sarah Michelle Gellar “Feud” Rumors

Jennifer Love Hewitt is setting the record straight about rumors of tension between her and former I Know What You Did Last Summer co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar. Despite online speculation, Hewitt insists there’s no bad blood—though she admits they haven’t spoken since filming the 1997 horror classic.

The rumors began after Gellar’s seemingly abrupt response during a red carpet interview at the Dexter: Original Sin premiere. When asked about Hewitt potentially returning for the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, Gellar replied, “I have nothing to do with that,” before walking away. The clip went viral, racking up millions of views and sparking fan theories about a behind-the-scenes rift.

Gellar later clarified on Instagram that she couldn’t discuss the project due to an NDA—but the internet had already run wild with the idea of a feud.

“I honestly don’t even know what that was or how it all came to be,” Hewitt told Vulture about the speculation. “Why do people always assume women in Hollywood are pitted against each other? It’s such an old narrative.”

When asked if she and Gellar had discussed the rumors, Hewitt revealed, “I haven’t seen Sarah since we were 18, back when the first movie came out. That’s why this is so funny to me. People were like, ‘Clap back!’ And I’m like, ‘About what? I haven’t spoken to her in decades.’ From my side, everything’s fine. I have no idea where this is coming from.”

Hewitt added that she’d hoped to reconnect with Gellar at the sequel’s premiere—but their paths never crossed, fueling even more rumors. Fans were disappointed when the two didn’t pose together on the red carpet, especially since Gellar’s husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., stars in the new film alongside Hewitt.

Later, Gellar posted a series of premiere photos on Instagram—none of which included Hewitt—prompting fans to flood the comments with questions like, “Where’s Jennifer?” and “Why no love for JLH?”

Gellar quickly responded, explaining, “For everyone asking—I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt, who is fantastic in the movie. I was inside with my kids during the carpet, and sadly, she didn’t make it to the after-party.” She added, “These events are chaotic—I didn’t get pics with most of the cast. But that doesn’t change how amazing I think they all are. Sometimes real life doesn’t play out like social media expects.”

So, for now, it seems the only drama is the one fans invented—not an actual feud between the two scream queens.
