Johnny Depp Speaks Out on ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Exit Nearly Five Years Later: “F–k You”

Nearly five years after being asked to step down from Fantastic Beasts, Johnny Depp isn’t mincing words about his abrupt departure from the Harry Potter prequel series.

“There’s far too many of me to kill. If you think you can hurt me more than I’ve already been hurt, you’re gravely mistaken,” the actor told The Telegraph in a candid new interview. Depp, who originally played the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen following a highly publicized legal battle with a British tabloid.

The Backstory: Why Depp Was Replaced

In 2018, Depp sued The Sun for labeling him a “wife-beater” amid abuse allegations from his ex-wife, Amber Heard. After losing the UK libel case in November 2020, Warner Bros. requested he resign from Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. By then, Depp had filmed just one scene for the third installment.

Reflecting on the studio’s decision, the 62-year-old actor didn’t hold back.

“Listen, they’ve said all kinds of things about me, and it doesn’t bother me. I’m not running for office,” Depp said. “It stopped in a millisecond—right in the middle of filming. They said, ‘We’d like you to resign.’ But what I heard was, ‘We want you to retire.’”

His response? “F–k you.”

From Grindelwald to Legal Battles

Depp first appeared as Grindelwald in 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, reprising the role in 2018’s The Crimes of Grindelwald. His exit was announced shortly after the UK court ruling.

“Johnny Depp will depart the Fantastic Beasts franchise,” Warner Bros. stated at the time. “We thank him for his work. The role of Grindelwald will be recast.”

Depp addressed the news in an Instagram statement, thanking fans for their support and confirming his intention to appeal the UK verdict. “The surreal judgment won’t change my fight for the truth,” he wrote. “My life and career won’t be defined by this moment.”

The Aftermath: Depp vs. Heard Trial

In 2019, Depp sued Heard over a Washington Post op-ed where she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” The explosive 2022 trial ended with the jury ruling in Depp’s favor, awarding him $15 million in damages. Heard won a partial victory, receiving $2 million for defamatory statements made by Depp’s lawyer.

The trial reportedly impacted Heard’s role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, with her screen time significantly reduced. Meanwhile, Depp has continued to focus on music and independent films, maintaining his defiant stance against the controversies that reshaped his career.
