Fans were eagerly hoping for a reunion between I Know What You Did Last Summer co-stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Love Hewitt at the recent premiere—but when the two didn’t appear together on the red carpet, speculation about a feud quickly spread. Gellar, however, was quick to set the record straight.
The original 1997 horror film’s star attended the event with her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., who also appears in the new sequel alongside Hewitt. While Gellar posed for photos with Prinze and her former Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Seth Green, fans noticed her absence from any shots with Hewitt—leading to a wave of disappointed comments online.

The confusion only grew when Gellar shared a series of Instagram photos from the premiere, none of which included Hewitt. In her caption, she gushed about the film, its cast, and director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (a close friend), but made no direct mention of Hewitt.
Fans quickly flooded the comments, asking, “Where’s Jennifer Love Hewitt?” and expressing sadness over the lack of acknowledgment. Some even speculated about tension between the two stars.
Minutes later, Gellar responded to clear the air. “For everyone asking—I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt, who is fantastic in the movie,” she wrote. “I was inside with my kids during the main carpet, and unfortunately, JLH didn’t make it to the afterparty.”

She added, “If you’ve ever been to one of these events, you know how chaotic they are. I didn’t get pics with most of the cast, but that doesn’t change how amazing I think they all are. Sometimes things just don’t happen in real life the way they do online.”
This isn’t the first time Gellar has had to shut down feud rumors. Back in December 2024, a red carpet interview went viral after she appeared to dodge a question about Hewitt’s involvement in the sequel. When asked about Hewitt’s potential return, Gellar replied, “I have nothing to do with that,” before walking away—sparking a frenzy online.
At the time, Gellar clarified on Instagram that her reaction was due to an earlier slip-up involving an unauthorized set photo, not any tension with Hewitt. She even shared the official announcement of Hewitt’s return to the franchise, showing there was no bad blood.

Hewitt herself addressed the rumors in a podcast interview, laughing off old gossip that she and Gellar had clashed in the ’90s. “I root for her and Freddie—they’ve been married forever and have kids. It’s adorable,” she said. “It’s funny seeing what people make up.”
Fans can catch Hewitt and Prinze Jr. back in action when I Know What You Did Last Summer hits theaters this weekend.
